THE POMEROY TROPHY

Introduction

The Pomeroy Trophy was last held on 16th January, 2021 at Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna Raceway, Templeton, Christchurch. Rather than straight out racing, the Pomeroy Trophy is a series of speed-based driving tests performed on a racetrack. The purpose of the event is to find the ideal touring car. A good touring car will have good acceleration, good handling excellent brakes and reliability at high speeds that will be tested by five driving tests:

  1. A standing quarter mile sprint
  2. A flying quarter mile sprint
  3. A zig-zag timed test (Hood to be erected)
  4. A braking test (Hood to be erected)
  5. A twenty-minute reliability trial

To allow for differences between cars, a handicapping formula was used which takes the time for each car to complete the test and adjusts it to take into account the vehicle's year of manufacture, engine capacity, wheel base, brake configuration and relative performance to other vehicles. Other factors that affected the score were whether the car could hold two regulation-sized suitcases, was road-legal, had more than one seat, and had a hood; all important factors when assessing whether a car is ideal for touring.

The event ended with a road section with points awarded for completion only.
